Aboriginal Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Development

The Aboriginal Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Development is in the early stages of becoming an institution that aims to create a conducive, enabling climate for Aboriginal communities and their partners, the developers, to pursue sustainability goals. It will create awareness, promote thought leadership and build capacity to achieve sustainability across a broad spectrum of issues.

The Centre will enable Aboriginal Communities and their partners to build relationships that are sustainable and contribute to the sustainable economic, social and environmental development of the Aboriginal community and their partners by embedding the principles of social responsibility into their strategies and processes. The permanence of ongoing sustainability must always be the foremost goal.

The Aboriginal Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Development will build on the principle that all projects on land controlled by Aboriginal peoples should be considered in terms of its contribution to the sustainability of the community and its partners. Projects supported by the Centre will be measured against the following criteria:

  • Contribution to a sustainable community over many generations
  • Sustained development that supports comprehensive social, economic and environmental development programs that result in improved health care and education at all levels, housing, cultural revitalization, community development; and
  • Short and long term employment and economic development in the community.
